The Batu Caves

We had a friend come in from Lagos and thought it would be fun to take him to the Batu Caves.  This is a Hindu shrine that is one of the most popular outside of India.  It is the focal point of Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia.  If you haven’t heard of it by that name it was on one of the travel channel specials about taboo. They do a lot of piercing, and consecrated ash is sprinkled over the hooks and skewers piercing the devotees’ flesh before they are removed.  In 2007 the festival attracted over 1.5 million people and this year was smaller but still was a lot of people.  We did not go this year, but do plan to attend next year as we heard it’s something not to miss.  Here is a link if you want to know what it is.

The stairs are made up of 272 steps to climb to the top.  It’s a good hike but worth the view and to see the shrines inside the caves.  The statue at the base is 140 feet high.  It is the tallest Lord Murugan statue in the world.  Quite an impressive place in general and is worth seeing if you make it to Malaysia.
